Photographic Wildlife Safaris

The first safaris were hunting safaris. Wealthy people paid to come to Africa and shoot big, dangerous wild game. Alternatively, wannabe wealthy people scoured the bush for enormous tusker elephants whose trophies would make them their fortunes. These people came to Africa with a singular aim, but left with profound memories burned into their minds and potent feelings etched into their souls. The memoirs and writings of people like Karen Blixen, Beryl Markham and Ernest Hemingway resonate with such sentiments.

In the same way, today’s wildlife safaris, the modern day offspring of the hunting safari, are dedicated to viewing and enjoying wild animals and their natural habitats. However, like the hunters and travellers of the past, there are other aspects of the African safari experience that will augment and enrich your holiday, and which will surprise and reward you in ways that you may not be able to predict. The camps you stay in are all different, their location and aspect often spectacular, sometimes spellbinding; the lodges and permanent camps that I choose all have their own very special uniqueness; the meals taken under open starlit skies may live in the memory longer than lazing lion prides or surging wildebeest herds; the night spent “fly camping” by a remote river water hole could be more thrilling than any fast car ride. These are the elements of my trips that make the safari special to each and every individual.

All my safari camps are operated through my outfitter here in Tanzania, Sokwe Ltd. Sokwe is a high-end luxury camping safari provider. Our combined experience in the luxury safari business means that my guests and I always have the peace of mind of knowing that all the tiny details and logistics needed for a smooth trip in Africa are taken care of, and as a consequence we can concentrate on enjoying Tanzania’s fabulous wildlife and wilderness.

My personally guided safaris are by definition unique, simply because I lead them. Like a handful of other private safari guides operating in Tanzania I offer individually designed itineraries based around a combination of stays in private mobile camps, small characterful luxury lodges and permanent bush camps. I can say without reservation that being on safari with me will not only allow you to see some great wildlife and visit some remarkable bush properties, but it will also afford you a unique insight and perspective into Tanzania and its present development.

When I am not available to lead a trip I arrange for one of my Tanzanian colleagues to guide the group. There are a few highly trained and charismatic people that I have worked with over the years and whom I respect and trust to provide an exceptional guided experience for my guests. Not only are they wildlife experts with intimate knowledge of the best wildlife areas, but they are also interesting and engaging people in their own right, people who you can enjoy spending a week or two on safari with. See the Guides Page for more information on my guiding colleagues.
